Sleep apnea affects a large number of people – nearly 18 million Americans suffer from the disorder and 80% of those cases are considered moderate or severe. Though sleep apnea is somewhat easy to diagnose, treatment isn’t as simple.
In short, sleep apnea is a disorder in which breathing stops for ten seconds or more during sleep. There are varying degrees of severity – obstructive sleep apnea happens when the throat muscles fail to keep the airway open, and central sleep apnea occurs when the brain fails to control breathing during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea is more common.
Typical treatments for sleep apnea could be lengthy, involved, and disruptive. Some patients are advised to use a continuous positive airway pressure device, or CPAP. This is a mask that is placed over the nose and/or mouth during sleep and blows air into the patient’s pathways to keep breathing regular overnight.
Other patients go through sleep studies, which require overnight stays and observation at designated sleep centers. These studies measure everything from sleep state to airflow and blood oxygen levels. Depending on the severity of the diagnosis, patients can start treatment while still at the sleep center.
But one treatment method that’s explored less often; yet could be more convenient and have life-long benefits, is orthodontics.
Quite often, sleep apnea results from a significant overbite or incorrect jaw positioning. Orthodontists are perfectly positioned to treat both issues. With overbites, a correction of the bite using braces or Invisalign can lead to a gradual reduction in sleep apnea symptoms. Once the bite is corrected, sleep apnea usually stops. For improperly positioned lower jaws, special mouthguards can be designed to hold the jaw in the right position during sleep. This keeps airways open and restores regular breathing – with no CPAP necessary.
Of course, there are other risk factors that contribute to sleep apnea, such as obesity, enlarged tonsils, and drug and alcohol use. However, for sleep apnea caused by jaw positioning or bite problems, orthodontics can serve as a less disruptive approach to treatment with long lasting results.
