In this edition of Friday Focus, Dr. O El-Hillal from E&S Orthodontics, your Phoenix Orthodontist, discusses the differences between Damon passive, self-ligating braces and traditional metal braces.
Hello everyone. My name is Dr. O and today I’m going to be answering the question: What is the difference between Damon braces and traditional braces? If this video was going to be 10 or 15 minutes long, I’d be able to really discuss the many differences between the two systems. However, I only have a limited amount of time so I’m going to summarize the main differences as quickly as I can.
In a nutshell, I would say to you that Damon Braces are different than traditional braces in the way they hold the wire in place in relation to the brackets. With traditional braces, you use elastics which tie around the braces and hold the wire in place. In contrast, Damon Braces use a little door on the outside of the bracket which holds the wire in, allowing more movement.
In addition, Damon Braces allow us to do a lot of non-extraction treatment – which means we don’t have to pull teeth to make space. If you have a lot of crowding and have been told that you need extractions, Damon Braces may be the ideal alternative system for you.
Damon braces allow us to create wide beautiful smiles. The bonus is we are using lighter forces, without an expander, so the treatment process is more comfortable. Damon braces allow you to move teeth in a gentler way than traditional braces and, as a result, a lot of our patients feel that their experience with braces is not as bad as their parents or friends who have had traditional braces.
Those are the biggest benefits of Damon braces. Especially for adults, it is my own personal opinion that Damon braces is the best adult system out there.
