Bonded or “Fixed” retainers are retainers that are glued in to the back (lingual) of two or more teeth to aid in retention. Fixed retainers offer many advantages over the use of just removable retainers alone. Since they are bonded to the tooth the same as any other orthodontic appliance, fixed retainers require little cooperation on the part of the patient.
Protecting your investment following orthodontic treatment can be a bit nerve-racking. However, fixed retainers offer some relief to the concerned parent. Take the responsibility out of retainers and discuss fixed retainers with your orthodontist.
There are some disadvantages to fixed retainers, however, at E&S Orthodontics we believe the advantages far out weigh the disadvantages. Check out the comparison below to see the advantages vs. disadvantages.
- Fixed appliance can not be removed
- Never lost or misplaced
- Works as a second level of protection from relapse
