An Orthodontist and Dentofacial Orthopedics Dentist, Dr. Mark Sowards brings a diverse background to the E&S team. He earned a BS degree with a double major in math and chemistry from Adams State University in Southern Colorado where he received a BS degree in Pharmacy and worked as a pharmacist for about 10 years.

He received his DDS degree from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. After graduation, Dr. Sowards was assigned to the Indian Health Service, serving as a Commission Officer in the USPHS (a branch of the Navy). He served four years on the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona and New Mexico, where he was trained in Pediatric Dentistry.

In 1990, Dr. Sowards earned a Specialty Degree in Orthodontics with a major in Oral Biology. He was trained in all of the current orthodontic delivery systems, with an emphasis in Burstone Segmental Mechanics.

Dr. Sowards opened an Orthodontic Practice in Yuma, where he practiced exclusively for 25 years. He also served in Yuma Regional Hospital’s Cleft Palate Team for 15 years, where his main area of interest was Distraction Osteogenesis Orthopedics.

In 2014, he and his wife sold their practice and moved to the Valley to be near their children and grandchildren. He joined the E&S team in 2017 and maintains current licensure in both Arizona and New Mexico. In his leisure time, Dr. Sowards enjoys running, trout fishing, and staying current in the latest orthodontics!
